Challenge

The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania sought to explore how holographic live beam communication could enhance medical education by bringing remote experts into the classroom with greater presence and immediacy.

Traditional video conferencing can connect people across distance, but it often limits the sense of engagement, attention, and shared space that is so important in clinical education. The challenge was to create a more human-centered way for medical students and faculty to interact with global guest experts who could not be physically present.

Geminai supported a live holographic education experience at Perelman, enabling medical lecturers from the UK and Uganda to appear in the classroom through life-scale holographic display technology.

The setup allowed the expert presenters to engage with students in real time, maintaining the spontaneity and connection of a live classroom experience while eliminating the need for travel.

Experience

Through Geminai’s holographic display, each physicians appeared with a stronger sense of physical presence than traditional video allows. Students could see, hear, and engage with presenters in a format designed to feel more direct, focused, and memorable.

The experience created a bridge between in-person instruction and remote expertise, showing how live, immersive holographic communication can support teaching, discussion, and collaboration in advanced medical education.

Impact

The project demonstrated how holographic technology can expand access to specialized knowledge while preserving the human connection that is essential to medical training.

For academic medicine, this use case points to a future where institutions can bring leading experts, global collaborators, and specialized voices into the classroom without the barriers of geography, cost, or scheduling.
